Fund Market Statistics – January 2021 Swiss fund market posts slight gain thanks to new money

Basel, 17 February 2021 – In January 2021, the volume of assets placed in the investment funds covered by the statistics compiled by Swiss Fund Data AG and Morningstar stood at CHF 1,339.9 billion, an increase of CHF 7.9 billion or 0.6% month-on-month. Net inflows totaled CHF 9.5 billion. The volume of assets entrusted by investors in Switzerland to the fund industry came to CHF 1,339,908 million in January 2021 (December 2020: CHF 1,332,031 million). “The financial markets showed a slight decline in January. The leading stock markets posted low single-digit losses. On balance, the volume of the Swiss fund market remained more or less stable as almost all fund categories recorded pleasing net inflows, with bond and equity funds faring best in this respect,” explained Adrian Schatzmann, CEO of the Asset Management Association Switzerland. By way of comparison, the figures for selected indexes in January 2021 were as follows (December 2020 in brackets): Dow Jones -2.04% (3.27%), S&P 500 -1.11% (3.71%), EURO STOXX 50 -2.00% (1.72%), SMI -1.05% (2.17%), SBI -0.32% (0.35%), and Bloomberg Barclays US Aggregate Bond Index -0.72% (0.14%). The CHF gained 0.17% against the EUR but lost 0.75% against the USD. Net inflows totaled CHF 9.5 billion in January 2021. Bond funds led the way with inflows of CHF 5.3 billion, followed by equity funds with CHF 3.7 billion. Only two fund categories suffered outflows, and these were minimal: CHF 243.6 million for money market funds, CHF 21.9 million for the “others” category. There were no changes in the ranking of the most popular asset classes: equity funds 44.43%, bond funds 30.56%, mixed-asset funds 10.36%, and money market funds 8.08%.
